Hardwood care information

Here is a snippet from the Hardwood Care section of our warranty disclosure packet. We provide these care tips on this site as general guidelines. But of course after you’ve selected your hardwood floor, please consult your manufactures care and warranty guidelines for more specific and detailed information.

1. Dust mop on a regular basis. Do not vacuum your floor.

2. Never clean your hardwood floor with water. Do not use oil soaps, liquid or paste wax
(on urethane finish floors), or other household cleaners that contain lemon or tongue oils. These products may ruin or dull the finish.

1. Follow recommended guidelines when caring for your new floor. Use only the floor care products recommended by the manufacturer of your pre-finished floor. Your Design Centre sales person will give maintenance instructions to you.

2. To help guard against scratches and dents, place protective pads under furniture legs and chairs. Make sure they are large enough to distribute weight evenly. Stiletto heels and heels that have lost their protective cap can indent the wood floor. Never allow bare wood to be exposed, as surface damage or discoloration can occur.

3. When moving heavy appliances or furniture, use a dolly. First, put down a quarter-inch sheet of plywood or Masonite to protect the floor. Never try to slide or roll heavy objects across the floor without these precautions.

4. Shading variance can occur (bleaching) if wood is subject to direct sunlight. Suitable window coverings should be installed to prevent this from occurring.

5. Rearrange rugs and furniture periodically, so the floor ages evenly. The sun's ultraviolet rays can age all wood products. Pad or rug-hold materials under area rugs should be carefully selected: some do not breathe and can affect the wood flooring.

6. Remove spills promptly. Use a soft cotton cloth to clean wet spills. For dry spills, dust mop or sweep floor immediately.

9. Wax Finish - Clean and wax every five to six months, or as often as is necessary.
Avoid heavy wax build-up by using a liquid wax stripper. Buff several times between
waxing to restore the luster of hardwood floors with an electric buffer, using FIBER
BRISTLE BRUSHES (DO NOT DO THIS PROCESS WITH A URETHANE
FINISH)

10. Please exercise caution when considering hardwood for wet areas (baths, laundry,
etc.), as continued exposure to water can cause damage to wood floors.
